Anita and Shalabh Ahuja turn trash into treasure. Shalabh, an engineer, and Anita, a creative visionary, founded Conserve India to transform the Indian practice of trash picking into an artistic resource. By “upcycling” plastic and polythene bags, Conserve reduces India’s mountain of waste while creating eye-popping fashion and functional art. Their unique Handmade Recycled Plastic (HRP) sheets morph into zippy and colorful bags, graphic-inspired wallets and belts, even shoes. But the upcycling doesn’t end there – Conserve goes several steps further, recycling and returning their profits back into the community, providing fair wages, investing in health clinics and education, and improving the lives of some of India’s poorest citizens.
